Key Tax Deadlines for January 2026: A Strategic Guide for Businesses

As we enter January 2026, it’s crucial for businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen to keep an eye on important tax deadlines. Proactive planning is essential to maintain compliance and avoid penalties, ensuring a smooth financial operation as the new year begins.

January 15 - Monthly Deposit Requirement for Employers

For employers adhering to monthly deposit rules, January 15 marks the deadline to deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes for December 2025. If the same rules apply, this is also the deadline for your nonpayroll withholding deposit. Remember, all employment tax deposits must be made electronically unless your total deposit liability is under $2,500 for a return period—allowing quarterly or annual remittance instead. Image 1

January 15 - Farmers and Fishermen’s Estimated Tax

Farmers and fishermen must pay their estimated taxes for 2025 using Form 1040-ES. While the filing deadline for your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) is April 15, failing to pay estimated taxes by January 15 requires filing your 2025 return and paying any tax due by March 2, 2026, to prevent penalties.
