Key Tax Deadlines for December 2025

This December brings crucial tax deadlines, including essential year-end planning, tip reporting, IRA withdrawals, and settling deductible expenses for 2025.Image 1

December 1 - Initiate Year-End Tax Strategies

The start of December marks a pivotal moment for finalizing tax strategies that could significantly impact your 2025 tax outcomes. We urge taxpayers experiencing notable income changes, shifts in marital or dependent status, or property sales in 2025 to schedule a tax planning consultation with us.

December 10 - Deadline for Reporting Tips

If you’re employed in a position where you receive tips, and those tips amounted to over $20 in November, the IRS mandates reporting to your employer using IRS Form 4070 by December 10. Your employer will then withhold FICA taxes and income tax from your regular wages. Should your regular wages fall short, the uncollected amounts will reflect in box 8 of your W-2, payable when filing your annual return.

For those born before January 1, 1952, December 31 is the cut-off for avoiding penalties on Traditional IRA account withdrawals. If you turned 73 in 2025, your initial required distribution pertains to the 2025 tax year, albeit delaying until April 1, 2026, is permissible. Coordinate with your IRA administrator to ensure timely withdrawals, particularly if closures on December 31 might affect access.

December 31 - Final Day for 2025 Deductible Payments

December 31 is also the deadline to make deductible payments pertinent to your 2025 return, excluding IRA, SEP, or Keogh contributions that can be made post-December 31, 2025. Remember to prepare in advance if completing these transactions by December 31 might prove challenging due to bank closures or other obstacles.

Important Considerations - Weekends & Holidays

In situations where deadlines land on weekends or public holidays, the due date extends to the business day that follows. It’s vital to account for these exceptions in your planning.

Extended Deadlines for Disaster Areas

For those within federally declared disaster areas, tax deadlines may extend. Consult these resources to confirm your eligibility: FEMA and IRS Disaster Relief.
