Key January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

The beginning of a new year ushers in fresh opportunities and responsibilities, especially when it comes to tax obligations. January 2026 brings pivotal deadlines that every individual taxpayer should note, whether it involves making estimated payments, reporting tips, or strategizing for optimal tax planning. Let’s dive in and ensure you’re prepared to meet these key dates with confidence.

January 2 - Set Up Your Tax Consultation

The start of January marks the official launch of tax season. If you have yet to schedule your tax preparation appointment, we urge you to do so soon. Avoid the last-minute rush by securing your spot with TaxDrx today, helping you stay ahead and organized.

January 12 - Deadline for Reporting Tips to Employers

If you’re an employee receiving tips, remember to report your December earnings exceeding $20 to your employer by January 12. Utilize IRS Form 4070 or an equivalent signed statement, including essential details such as your name, address, Social Security number, and the total tips for the month. Your employer is obliged to withhold FICA and income taxes from your wages based on these reported tips. Any shortfall in covering the withholdings will appear in box 8 of your W-2 form, necessitating payment when you file your annual return.

January 15 - Fourth Quarter Estimated Tax Payment Due

Ensure that your fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year is completed by January 15 to circumvent potential penalties. Missing this deadline requires you to file your 2025 tax return and remit any outstanding tax by February 2, 2026, to escape the estimated tax penalty.

Weekends & Holidays: If any due date falls on a weekend or legally recognized holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day.
