Over 53 Million Taxpayers Claimed New OBBBA Deductions—Did You Leave Money on the Table?

When the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) passed in mid-2025, it introduced sweeping tax relief. Recent Treasury and IRS data reveals that over 53 million individual filers claimed at least one of these new benefits during the 2026 tax season. However, an independent poll suggests a significant number of eligible taxpayers are still missing out.

What the Early Data Tells Us

Overall, IRS data paints a clear picture of widespread adoption. As of early April, the IRS processed roughly 120 million returns, issuing $274 billion in refunds. The average refund jumped 11% to $3,462. Here is a breakdown of the most utilized OBBBA provisions:

  • Overtime Wage Deduction: Over 25 million individuals claimed this, averaging $3,100 per return.
  • Tip Income Deduction: Claimed on more than 6 million returns with an average deduction of $7,100.
  • Enhanced Senior Deduction: Over 30 million older taxpayers utilized this. Claims averaged $7,500 (while individual limits are $6,000, joint filers can claim up to $12,000).
  • American-Made Car Loan Interest: Just over 1 million taxpayers deducted interest on qualifying auto loans.
  • Standard Deduction and Trump Accounts: Over 100 million used the permanently doubled standard deduction, and roughly 5 million opened new Trump Accounts for minors, though these do not generate an immediate tax deduction.

The Hidden Awareness Gap

Despite these high numbers, many hardworking individuals and business owners inadvertently left money on the table. A recent Bipartisan Policy Center survey highlighted a striking gap between eligibility and actual claims. While 27% of respondents reported earning overtime pay, only 15% claimed the OT deduction. Similarly, 17% earned tip income, yet a mere 10% utilized the associated tax break.

Why Are Taxpayers Missing These Deductions?

As proactive tax advisors here at TaxDrx, we frequently see the confusion that follows major legislative updates. The primary culprit this season was the 2025 transitional rules. Form W-2 and 1099 formats were not updated in time to distinctly separate cash tips or qualified overtime. Employers were not mandated to provide these totals, leaving many taxpayers and preparers struggling to document the claims accurately.

Additionally, complex income-phaseout rules and occupation restrictions technically disqualified some individuals, while stringent recordkeeping requirements deterred others from navigating the process without strategic tax advisory support.
