July 2026 Tax Deadlines: Your Mid-Year Financial Check-Up

Summer often brings a much-needed change of pace, making it the perfect moment to pause and assess your financial health. At TaxDrx, we frequently remind our clients—from solopreneurs here in Cranford, New Jersey, to the high-income professionals we serve virtually—that July is a critical pivot point in the tax year.

Instead of waiting until December to uncover overlooked deductions or realizing your estimated payments are off track, a mid-year review gives you the runway to make meaningful adjustments. Let’s walk through the key individual tax deadlines and reminders for July 2026 to keep your strategy on course and your mind at ease.

July 1 – Your Mid-Year Tax Check-Up

Like any good preventative care, your tax strategy requires routine check-ups. By July 1, the year is half over. This is the optimal time to sit down and review your 2026 year-to-date income and expenses. For independent contractors, freelancers, and small business owners, this step is vital to ensure your estimated tax payments and withholdings are adequate.

Failing to adjust for a surge in mid-year income can lead to steep underpayment penalties come April. We recommend pulling your June financial statements and projecting out the next six months. If your cash flow or profit margins have shifted significantly since the first quarter, your tax plan needs to shift right alongside them.

July 10 – Reporting June Tip Income

If you work in the service industry or any role where you receive tips, the IRS has strict reporting timelines you need to follow. Employees who received more than $20 in tips during the month of June must report that income to their employer no later than July 10.

How to Report and What Happens Next

You can use IRS Form 4070 or provide a written statement to your employer. This statement must include your signature, name, address, Social Security number, your employer’s name and address, the specific period covered, and the total tips received.

Once reported, your employer is required to withhold FICA taxes and income tax from your regular wages to cover the liability on those tips. If your standard paycheck isn’t large enough to cover these withholdings, the uncollected amount will be reported in box 8 of your W-2. You will then be responsible for paying that uncollected tax when you file your annual return.

Handling Weekends, Holidays, and Disaster Extensions

Tax deadlines can sometimes clash with the calendar or, worse, unexpected emergencies. If a standard tax due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the IRS automatically extends your filing deadline to the next business day that is not a legal holiday.

Relief for Designated Disaster Areas

For taxpayers dealing with severe weather or natural emergencies, the IRS often provides extended grace periods. When a geographical area is federally designated as a disaster area, tax deadlines are pushed back to offer relief. If you believe you might be affected, you can verify disaster declarations and extension dates through these official resources:
