How the 2026 Mid-Year IRS Mileage Rate Increase Impacts Your Business Deductions

If you have been watching the numbers at the pump lately, you already know that transportation costs are taking a heavier toll on cash flow this year. Recognizing the strain that soaring gas prices place on business operations, the IRS has stepped in with an unusual mid-year adjustment. For the second half of 2026, the optional vehicle mileage rate has been increased to help taxpayers offset these rising expenses.

For our clients here in Cranford, New Jersey, and the business owners we serve virtually across the country, capturing every available deduction is a core part of preserving wealth. Whether you are a solopreneur driving to client meetings or managing a growing enterprise, understanding how these new rates impact your tax strategy is essential for accurate bookkeeping and strategic planning as we close out the year.

Breaking Down the 2026 Mid-Year Mileage Rates

The IRS uses data from independent studies of vehicle operating costs to set these figures. While rates are typically locked in for the entire calendar year, significant shifts in the economy—like rapid spikes in fuel prices—can trigger a mid-year adjustment. Effective July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2026, the updated rates are as follows:

  • Business Use: 76.0 cents per mile (an increase of 3.5 cents from the 72.5-cent rate used during the first half of the year).
  • Medical and Moving: 23.5 cents per mile (up 3 cents from the prior 20.5-cent rate). Note: The moving deduction is currently restricted primarily to active-duty members of the military.
  • Charitable Use: 14 cents per mile (this rate is set by statute and remains unchanged).

If you track mileage for your business, you will need to cleanly separate your records into two periods: January 1 through June 30, and July 1 through December 31, to ensure you apply the correct rate for each trip.

What the Standard Mileage Rate Actually Covers

IRS building reflecting tax regulations

The standard mileage rate is designed to simplify tax preparation by bundling the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile into a single per-mile figure. When you opt for this method, you are claiming a deduction that inherently accounts for gas, oil, lubrication, routine maintenance, repairs, vehicle registration fees, insurance, and straight-line depreciation.

However, choosing the standard rate does not mean you have to leave other legitimate expenses on the table. You can still deduct parking fees and tolls incurred during business travel. Additionally, state and local property taxes attributable to the business use of the vehicle remain separately deductible. It is worth noting that sales tax paid at the time of a vehicle's purchase must be capitalized into the vehicle's basis, meaning it cannot be deducted as a separate line item.

Standard Mileage vs. Actual Expenses: Which Strategy Fits?

While the standard mileage rate offers simplicity, taxpayers always have the option to track and deduct their actual vehicle expenses. In an environment of elevated fuel prices and higher maintenance costs, calculating your precise actual expenses might produce a larger tax benefit.

Before switching methods, however, you must navigate several strict IRS rules. For instance, you are prohibited from using the business standard mileage rate if you have previously claimed a Section 179 deduction for that specific vehicle, or if you utilized any depreciation method under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS). Furthermore, the standard rate cannot be applied to vehicles used for hire or if you operate a fleet of five or more vehicles simultaneously.

If you are putting a new vehicle into service this year, the initial choice between the standard rate and actual expenses is critical, as it will dictate your options for the life of the vehicle.
