Essential June 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals and Expats

As we approach the midway point of the year, June brings a wave of crucial tax deadlines that require your attention. For many taxpayers—especially the solopreneurs, high-income professionals, and expats we work with here at TaxDrx—missing these dates can lead to unnecessary penalties and cash flow disruptions.

Our mission is to deliver clarity and peace of mind by keeping you ahead of the curve. Let us walk through the key individual tax deadlines for June 2026 so you can stay compliant, organized, and confident.

June 1: Form 5498 and IRA Valuations

By June 1, IRA trustees are required to issue Form 5498 to account owners. This document reports the fair market value (FMV) of your IRA as of December 31, 2025. While you do not need to attach this form to your tax return, it is a vital piece of information. The year-end FMV is used to calculate required minimum distributions (RMDs) for individuals who are age 73 or older in 2026. Keep this document securely in your records to ensure your RMD calculations are perfectly accurate.

June 10: May Tip Reporting

If you work in a tipped profession and earned more than $20 in tips during May, you must report these earnings to your employer by June 10. You can use IRS Form 4070 or provide a signed written statement detailing your name, address, Social Security number, employer details, and the total tips received.

Your employer will use this report to withhold FICA and income taxes from your regular wages. If your base pay is insufficient to cover these withholdings, the uncollected amount will be reported in box 8 of your W-2. You will then be responsible for paying it when you file your annual return.

June 15: Second Quarter Estimated Tax Payments

The United States tax system operates on a pay-as-you-earn basis. For business owners, freelancers, and investors whose income is not subject to standard payroll withholding, June 15 is the strict deadline for your second-quarter estimated tax payment for the 2026 tax year. Missing this payment—or underpaying—can trigger penalties calculated on a quarter-by-quarter basis using the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points.

To avoid underpayment penalties, you must meet one of the IRS safe harbor minimums:

  • The 90% Rule: Your total payments equal or exceed 90% of your actual tax liability for the current year.
  • The 100% Rule: Your prepayments equal 100% of the tax owed in the previous year. For high-income earners with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) over $150,000 (or $75,000 if married filing separately), this safe harbor jumps to 110% of the prior year’s tax.

As a tax-focused advisory firm, we frequently see taxpayers get caught off guard after a major financial event, such as selling property, earning a large bonus, or experiencing a sudden jump in business revenue. If your income has shifted significantly, estimating your safe harbor accurately is essential. State-level safe harbor rules can also differ from federal guidelines. If you need help recalculating your targets, our team at TaxDrx is always ready to step in.

June 15: Deadlines for Taxpayers Living Abroad

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working outside the United States and Puerto Rico, you receive an automatic two-month extension to file your return and pay any taxes due by June 15.

If you need more time to gather your documents, you can file Form 4868 to request an additional extension to October 15. However, it is vital to remember this is strictly an extension to file, not an extension to pay. Any estimated tax owed should be paid by June 15 to avoid late payment penalties and interest.

Military personnel serving in combat zones or qualified hazardous duty areas receive additional, specialized extensions. Generally, deadlines are paused for the duration of service in the combat zone plus 180 days, along with any days left to file when entering the zone.

Navigating Disaster Extensions and Holidays

As a general rule, if a tax due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically pushes forward to the next business day. Additionally, the IRS frequently grants extended deadlines for taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas.

To check if your region qualifies for special disaster-related extensions, you can verify your status through these official resources:
